The Poseidon Neptune bronze door knocker was completed using the following patinas “colors”:
• Liver of Sulphur
• Ferric Nitrate
A scrubbing pad was also used to rub the bronze in order to create the highlights.
The spray bottle with distilled water was used to wash and dilute the chemicals.
A propane torch is used to heat the metal to over 200 degree fahrenheit. The hotter the metal, the quicker chemical reaction one gets. It is always wise to start with a somewhat diluted solution and work your way to a darker patina.
The technique should be to get an even distribution of heat throughout the bronze.
After the patina application, wax was applied with a brush and rag. The wax serves as a sealer. The wax also gives the patina a gloss.
